435,000 Yahoo usernames and passwords hacked and exposed

If you’re a Yahoo Voices user, it’s time to change your password.
Security for the service appears to have been compromised early Thursday morning. A list titled “Owned and Exposed” which is “brought to you by the D33Ds Company” was posted online revealing a number of details for the service including all of the email addresses and passwords for Yahoo Voices’ 450,000 users.

In checking the usernames, I was able to ascertain it is actually Yahoo! Voices that was affected.
That’s significant, because 435,000 is similar enough to the 600,000 users Yahoo currently references on the Voices website to conceivably be the contributor database as it existed some months or years in the past.
The passwords contained a wide variety of email addresses including those from yahoo.com, gmail.com, aol.com, and much more. The affected website was only named as a subdomain

of yahoo.com however digging through and searching for the hostname, the attacker forgot to remove the hostname “dbb1.ac.bf1.yahoo.com” (credit to Mubix for the hostname find).

India Govt Trying to protect websites from 9 July Anonymous attack

Indian government is seeking to batten down the hatches against the 9 June cyber attack planned by the Anonymous Internet activist group over content censorship, besides seeking to track those said to be behind the campaign.
But it didn’t stop the group from claiming to have taken down the website of the state-run phone company Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd on Thursday.

The online protest will be buttressed with real-world street protests on Saturday, according to the group. The government has meanwhile issued an advisory to its departments and private organizations that host websites and run data centres about protecting themselves from attack.

“In the recent post on the Internet, the said hacker group has announced to carry out street protest on 9 June, 2012. The hacker group may also conduct defacement and launch distributed denial of services (DDoS) attacks against websites of government and private organization during the time,” the advisory said.
Anonymous is a secretive Internet group that originated in 2003, its members largely unknown to each other, to fight any move it deems is against free speech on the Internet.
A DDoS attack is one in which a number of compromised systems attack a single target, causing denial of service for users of the targeted system.

Officials investigating the attacks said the Anonymous group is using various techniques such as virtual private network (VPN) connections to hide their identity.
VPN interconnects remote, and often geographically separate, networks through primarily public communication infrastructures such as the Internet.

“We have tracked their identities and found that they are using VPN networks of Sweden and the US to target websites in India. They create a tunnel between India and Sweden and between US and India,” said an investigator who declined to be named. “It appears that they deliberately used these countries as data protection laws are very stringent in both the countries.”

Anonymous hacks MTNL website to protest against "censorship"

he website of state-run telecom company MTNL was disrupted by a hacking group to protest against "censorship" of the internet. MTNL's corporate website could not be accessed, following the attack since afternoon and officials said efforts were underway to restore it. However, its individual city-specific websites (for Delhi and Mumbai) were working.

A post on the Anonymous Operation India web page claimed responsibility for the hacking saying "we are against Internet Censorship. Instead of blocking few URLs, the ISP (MTNL) blocked the whole domain of various file sharing websites."
It has also asked netizens to wear 'Guy Fawkes' masks, which have become synonymous with Occupy Wall Street protests, during a fresh round of peaceful protests to be held on June 9.

Gmail Users Alert And Protect Your Account Says Google -Change Your Password

Google has begun alerting users of its Gmail system that they could be targeted by state-sponsored hacking of their accounts on the popular email platform.
Eric Grosse, the company's vice president of Security Engineering, announced the new policy in a blog posting on Tuesday night, saying that the warning would appear in a pink bar to users that Google considered at risk.
“Our detailed analysis - as well as victim reports - strongly suggest the involvement of states or groups that are state-sponsored,” Grosse said, urging users to make sure they had strong passwords to their accounts, and took other security measures, such as using Google's two step verification process.
Grosse said that revealing more information about the nature of the attacks and their links to state-sponsored organisations would aid hackers in penetrating users' accounts.

Important account security tips:
- Never give out your password or personal information by email or on social
networks. Google will never contact you to ask you for your password.
- Never use the same password for Google and other websites.
- Add your mobile phone to your account, so that you can easily pass Google's security
measures and make it hard for hijackers to get in.

Russian hacker leaks 6.5million LinkedIn account passwords

Around six million users of the social networking site LinkedIn have had their passwords stolen, according to technology experts.
The website, popular with businessmen and women, has confirmed that it was hacked after a file containing 6.5million encrypted passwords was published on a Russian hackers’ web forum.
Experts are now advising users to change their passwords on LinkedIn and other websites for which they use the same password.

They also warn that the stolen passwords are probably already in the hands of criminals if the security breach is genuine.
LinkedIn has more than 160million users in 200 countries and nine million in the UK.

‘Our advice is to change your LinkedIn password. And if you use the same password on other accounts, change it there too.’

The news comes after LinkedIn was forced to change its policies after it was accused of a privacy breach discovered by web security researchers.
The problem concerned a mobile app which sent unencrypted calendar entries, such as phone numbers and passwords for conference calls, to LinkedIn servers without the users’ knowledge.
On Tuesday a hacker with the username ‘dwdm’ appealed for help on the Russian hackers’ forum to decrypt the files and access the original passwords.
By yesterday morning, hackers claimed to have revealed hundreds of thousands of passwords.

Facebook Was Shut Down by Anonymous Hackers !

Facebook experienced service outages for portions of its 900 million users tonight after the social networking site was apparently targeted by hacking group Anonymous.
Taking to Twitter to express their displeasure, Facebook users from the United States to Singapore reported being unable to log onto the website for around three hours from approximately 8 p.m till about 11 p.m EST.
The mass outages for the famously reliable social networking site capped off a topsy-turvy two weeks for founder Mark Zuckerberg after Facebook's stock closed at $29.60 per share on Thursday, down 22 percent from its offering price of $38.
Facebook admitted they experienced problems during the evening: 'Earlier today, some users briefly experienced issues loading the site. The issues have since been resolved and everyone should now have access to Facebook. We apologise for any inconvenience.'
However, hacking group Anonymous indicated via its Twitter account that it was behind the slowdown and when asked Facebook did not deny this.
'Looks like good old Facebook is having packet problems' was one tweet posted by @YourAnonNews as well as 'Oh yeah ... RIP Facebook a new sound of tango down, b------.'

On Twitter at around 10 p.m EST, 'RIP Facebook' was among the top ten trending topics in the United States and across the world.
Earlier on in the day members of the Anonymous hacking collective had claimed credit for the attack on the American Nazi Party's website and caused a denial-of-service to the right wing group's internet presence. The site was working again by Thursday evening.
Indeed, even mobile devices were not spared as some Facebook users on iOS and Android devices reported being affected by the outage.
Facebook is famous for not suffering from extensive outages, while users of Twitter have come to expect short interruptions in service.

News Corp. Could Face 500 Phone-Hacking Claims

A lawyer for Rupert Murdoch's British newspaper group says the company could face 500 lawsuits from victims of tabloid phone hacking – far more than have so far been filed.

Michael Silverleaf told a court hearing Friday that "we are dealing with 500 claims, potentially" from people who say their voicemail messages were intercepted by the now-defunct News of the World.
Murdoch's News Group Newspapers has paid millions to settle lawsuits from 60 actors, athletes, politicians and other public figures whose voicemails were hacked by the tabloid.
More than 45 new cases are due to go to court, with claimants including soccer star Wayne Rooney and Cherie Blair, wife of former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
